What documents should you bring to board a flight?

For domestic flights ✈️

  • Children under 12:
    • Accompanied by parents or guardians: must have a Birth Certificate (original or certified copy) or another ID that shows parental relationship.
    • Unaccompanied or with authorized companions: need a photo ID and a travel authorization (judicial or extrajudicial) issued by parents or guardians with notarized signatures.
  • Teens (12–15 years old): Same rules as children, but the ID must include a photo (Birth Certificate is not accepted).
  • Adults and teens (16–17 years old): Can board with an ID, driver’s license, work card, passport, certified copy of an ID, or a police report in case of theft or loss.
  • Foreigners of any age: Must carry a passport, Foreigner ID Card (CIE/RNE), or diplomatic/consular ID.

For international flights 🌍

  • Children and teens (0–17 years old):
    • Accompanied by both parents: only a passport is required.
    • Accompanied by one parent: passport and authorization from the absent parent with notarized signature are required.
    • Accompanied by authorized third parties: a passport and express authorization from parents/guardians with notarized signatures are needed.
  • Brazilian adults: Must present a valid Brazilian passport, except in Mercosur countries where an ID is accepted. In case of loss, apply for a new passport. Abroad, contact the Brazilian Embassy.
  • Foreigners of any age: Must carry a passport for all destinations. Mercosur citizens may also use their Civil Identity Card (ID). In case of loss, contact your country’s embassy.

⚠️ If your passport is less than six months from expiration, check with the airline to confirm if boarding will be allowed.

When should I arrive at the airport?

  • For domestic flights: Arrive at least 1 hour before departure.
  • For international flights: Arrive up to 3 hours before departure.

Time-Saving Tips:

  • Check-in online before leaving home! This can be done on the airline's website, and to make it easier, print your boarding pass. 🖨️✈️
  • Baggage check-in: If you have bags to check or are traveling during busy periods (weekends, holidays, or school vacations), arrive even earlier.
  • Security and immigration: After checking your bags, you’ll go through security, and for international flights, immigration as well. Plan for these steps.

What is the baggage allowance on a plane?

Each airline has its own baggage rules, so it’s important to check the specific policy when booking. Some airlines only include carry-on baggage in the ticket price, and you may need to pay an extra fee for checked bags.

For Domestic Flights

  • Carry-on baggage: 1 piece with maximum dimensions of 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm and a weight of up to 10 kg.
  • Checked baggage: 1 bag up to 23 kg in the cargo hold.

For International Flights

  • Carry-on baggage: 1 piece with dimensions of 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm and a maximum weight of 10 kg.
  • Checked baggage: Up to 64 kg (usually two bags of 23 kg each).

Tip: Pay attention to size and total weight variations, which may depend on your travel class. If your baggage exceeds the maximum allowed weight, you will need to pay an extra fee, which varies by airline.

What’s the difference between a connection and a layover?

  • Layover: The plane stops at one or more airports before reaching the final destination. During these stops, new passengers may board, others may disembark, or the plane may refuel. Travelers already on board stay in the same aircraft until the final destination. 🛬
  • Connection: You’ll need to change planes one or more times before reaching your destination. This typically happens at hub airports where you switch flights. 🔄

Can I transfer my airline ticket to someone else?

Yes! Many airlines now allow ticket transfers to another person, but this may involve a fee. 💼

Important: Transfer rules vary by airline. Always contact the responsible company directly to check the specific policy and ensure the transfer is processed correctly.

How to exchange or cancel an airline ticket?

Each airline has its own rules for canceling or rescheduling tickets. Change and refund fees can vary widely and may even depend on the type of ticket you purchased. In some cases, the fees might be higher than the ticket price itself!

Important tips:

  • Free cancellation: You have the right to cancel your ticket for free within 24 hours of purchase, as long as the flight is at least 7 days away from the purchase date.
  • Flight changes: If the airline changes your flight by more than 30 minutes from the original time, you’re also entitled to free cancellation.
